2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the tragic passing of former United goalkeeper Mel Rees.
Now, we pay homage to Rees with our limited edition Bobble Hat and Pin Badge set. The set celebrates the life and sublime goalkeeping displays during his brief but memorable stint at United.
Originally signed due to a goalkeeping crisis at Bramall Lane, Rees was thrown straight in for his debut in March of '92 against Liverpool - keeping a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory - instantly making a name for himself with a number of outstanding saves.
He went on to play a total of 9 games for United, as they finished the 91/92 campaign in great form, with wins over Spurs and Everton - where Rees turned out a man-of-the-match performance.
On the 3rd of April, 1993, prior to the FA Cup semi-final against our Steel City rivals, Rees took a lap of honour at Wembley. It was to be his last public appearance.
8 weeks later, aged just 26, Rees sadly lost his battle with cancer of the bowel. Few players leave such a significant mark in such a short space of time the way Rees did. He left his mark on thousands of Unitedites with both his performances and bravery.
The bobbles Incorporate the instantly recognisable pattern from his goalkeeper shirt at the time and a number 1 on the back. They come with a commemorative pin badge which features Rees in action, along with the words:
MEL REES 1967-1993.
10% from all proceeds will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK.
As ever - limited edition. 25 pieces to be precise. Once they're gone, they're gone.
